American Platinum Eagle
Platinum Bullion with Collector Potential
The Platinum Eagle Series was introduced in 1997 into a market with few options. Uncirculated Platinum Eagles were issued every year from 1997 to 2008. Due to soft demand, the Mint placed the Uncirculated Platinum Eagle issue on a six year hiatus. (Proof issues were made every year to date.) Except for the 1997 through 1999 dates, Platinum Eagle mintages are miniscule. This makes Platinum Eagles intriguing as a collectible series. Another interesting feature of the Platinum Eagle market is its tight supply. Because few Platinum Eagles have been made and the Mint produces them sporadically, demand can easily outpace supply. In these instances, Platinum Eagle premiums have soared. When this happens, it opens an opportunity for Platinum Eagle holders to take advantage of the premium by trading their coins for cheaper platinum or other metals
Proof Platinum Eagles are also available at higher prices. The Proof issues also have tiny mintages. Each year has a different reverse design, too; which makes them interesting to collect.
Platinum Eagles are also available in Half, Quarter, and Tenth ounce sizes at premiums similar to U.S. Gold Eagles of comparable size.
