Here is an interesting Trade Dollar! Coins like these were sometimes made into personal mementos since they were no longer able to be spent. They are called box dollars, or sometimes ‘opium dollars’. This one has been hollowed out on the inside and inscribed with an ornate D P script. Above that is inscribed ‘Xmas 1901’ The other half of the inside has a picture of a baby which may be contemporary; but probably is from a later time. This was undoubtedly someone’s treasured Christmas gift! At one time, the coin was hinged together, but the hinge has since broken.
