United States $5.00 Indian, Extremely Fine
A Unique Design, Enjoyable to Collect
The $5.00 Indian Gold Half Eagle and its $2.50 Quarter Eagle companion were the only United States coins with a sunken relief design. This means that the central design was stamped into the coin instead of being portrayed in relief. The $5.00 Indian was issued sporadically from 1908 to 1929. The unique incuse design and Indian motif have always been popular with collectors. In the past, Extremely Fine $5.00 Indians sold for substantial premiums; often double their gold value or more! Currently, these coins can be purchased for a little more than 30% over their bullion value. While this represents a significant premium over its intrinsic value, a $5.00 Indian is much cheaper than it once was. The $5.00 Indian is an appropriate purchase for collectors anticipating that demand (and premiums) for this coin will rise again.
