A Bullion Priced Coin with Collector Potential

The Australian Nugget series was introduced in 1986 as another pure gold option with a uniquely Australian flavor. The first of these coins featured depictions of actual famous gold nuggets discovered in Australia’s gold mining history. By 1989, the Nugget’s manufacturer, the Perth Mint, realized that Kangaroos made a far more attractive and recognizable design element. Each year since 1990, the Gold Nugget (as it is still technically known) has a different type of Kangaroo on its reverse. Because these ‘Kangaroos’ have new designs every year and are made in limited quantities, some issues have developed collector premiums over the bullion value. The ‘Kangaroos’ trade for slightly higher premiums than other gold bullion coins. The small extra premium may be justified, however, if there is a chance for significant collector appreciation in the future.
