It is the FIRST year of issue for San Francisco Mint coinage.

It is the ONLY type 1 gold dollar issued at the San Francisco Mint.

Population of 36 pieces in this grade and only 38 in all higher grades!  As a first year of issue you’d expect that more were saved as the first of their kind…but that is not the case!
