John Bell (1796-1869) was a candidate running for president of the United States in the tumultuous 1860 election.  He was a senator from Tennessee running under the upstart Constitutional Union Party.  Though he was from a Southern state, he advocated preservation of the Union and garnered some support from the north.  He ultimately carried three states in the election; Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
