This is an absolutely fantastic Shield Nickel Starter collection! It appears to have been assembled in the late 1940’s and not disturbed since! (The back page of the folder advertises ‘Liberty Standing Half Dollar – Starting 1937’ – meaning it was produced before the completion of the series in 1947.) The set contains 7 evenly matched Shield Nickels. They are:
1866 – Extremely Fine; 1867 Rays – Extremely Fine, with digs on the reverse; 1867 No Rays – Choice Extremely Fine; 1868 – Very Fine; 1868 (Duplicate in 1869 slot) Ch. Extremely Fine 45; 1870 – Almost Uncirculated with light verdigris on reverse; and the elusive 1871 – Very Fine.
This is an absolutely amazing group that has traveled together for 70 years. It should stay together as a set!
