The Grand Army of the Republic founded in 1866 was one of the most influential political groups of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its membership was comprised of former Union Civil War soldiers that held annual encampments around the country from 1868 to 1949. The 1891 affair was held in Detroit, Michigan. At that time, the organization was near its peak enrollment with nearly half a million members.
