This is a silver coin of Henri II (AD 1547 – AD 1559) from the Rennes Mint. Henri II had the sorry distinction of being one of the more notable persons to die as a result of a Jousting competition. He was wounded in the eye by a fragment of his opponent’s lance on 30 June 1559. Ouch! He lingered on for another ten days before finally succumbing to sepsis on July 10. The high profile nature of the jousting death led to a significant decrease in the popularity of the sport.
